Côte d’Ivoire negotiation group refines definition of legal timber

On 8 April, representatives of the EU and the VPA negotiation committee of Côte d'Ivoire held its sixth technical session by video conference to discuss principles, criteria and indicators for the definition of legal timber. Such a definition based on national laws is one of the essential building blocks of a VPA. Committee members plan to refine the legality definition based on comments from and discussions with the EU, and to specify corresponding legal references. The second formal negotiation session is set for June in Brussels.

To further meet the VPA objectives of better governance and transparency of the forestry sector, the Ministry of Water and Forests recently published procedures related to forestry operations on their website.
