Honduras holds the first round of negotiations on its Voluntary Partnership Agreement with the EU

The first Voluntary Partnership Agreement negotiation session between Honduras and the European Union was held 22–24 January 2013 in the capital Tegucigalpa. The VPA will help ensure that only timber verified to be legal under Honduras law can be exported to the EU.

Honduras has set the stage for a participatory path to develop its VPA that engages stakeholders in government, the private sector and civil society, and encourages their feedback. Stakeholders' understanding of how the VPA could be shaped has already increased significantly during 2012. The Honduras national Forest Conservation Institute (Instituto Nacional de Conservación y Desarrollo Forestal, Áreas protegidas y Vida silvestre (ICF)) is raising awareness about both the FLEGT Action Plan and VPAs to encourage broad participation in the process. A series of workshops, with financial support of FAO's EU-FLEGT programme, will be held throughout the country in 2013. The first of these workshops should take place in La Ceiba on 7 and 8 February.

The German development cooperation agency GIZ is supporting the negotiation of the VPA process in Honduras through the hiring of a FLEGT facilitator, who is expected to be in place by early February 2013.
