Guyana to conduct additional stakeholder consultations on the VPA
Guyana is organising stakeholder consultations in addition to those originally planned, following its second VPA negotiation session with the EU, held in Brussels on 18 July.
During the technical meetings and a negotiation session, participants reviewed the geographical and product scope of the VPA, Guyana's existing timber-tracking system, legality definition and compliance framework, EU import procedures and specifications for FLEGT licences. Both parties noted a need for more work to determine the appropriate scope of the VPA, and revised the roadmap to give Guyana time to conduct further consultations with stakeholders.
The negotiation session followed two days of technical discussions and a meeting between the Guyana and the EU with European stakeholders. Further technical sessions have been scheduled for September and December.
