Indonesia publishes action plan on advancing VPA implementation and FLEGT licensing
The Ministry of Forestry has posted the ‘Indonesian–EU Action Plan on Advancement of VPA Implementation' on the Indonesian Legal Wood website, Sistem Informasi Legalitas Kayu. The plan outlines 17 actions that prepare Indonesia to issue FLEGT-licensed timber. Representatives of Indonesia, the EU Delegation to Indonesia and the EU FLEGT Facility reviewed and updated the action plan during meetings in Jakarta in January 2014.
In November 2013, the Ministry of Forestry launched a multistakeholder process to revise SVLK regulations and procedures through regional and national workshops. Once the revisions are agreed, they will also serve as the timber legality definition of the Indonesia–EU VPA. SVLK (Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu) is the timber legality assurance system of Indonesia.
Indonesia and the EU completed the first phase of an independent evaluation of the SVLK in 2013. The evaluation acknowledged the outstanding work Indonesia has done to ensure the legality of its timber and timber products and set out the improvements that need to be made for the system to be fully operational and FLEGT licences issued. Indonesia and the EU plan to conduct the next evaluation phase in September 2014.
