New Head of EFI FLEGT and REDD Unit appointed

Mr. Heiko Liedeker has been appointed as the Head of the FLEGT and REDD Unit at the European Forest Institute.

Mr. Liedeker will start his service at EFI in January 2012, and will be based in the EFI Policy Advice Office in Barcelona, Spain.

Mr. Liedeker has extensive experience in leading and facilitating international multi-cultural, interdisciplinary teams. He is currently working as executive director of Leading Standards GmbH, an expert organization which provides strategic advice and support to public agencies, private sector and civil society organizations on the development and implementation of social, environmental and economic sustainability standards.

His professional career has focused on the development, implementation and management of projects, programmes and strategies to enable and promote sustainable forest management, forest conservation and forest rehabilitation. He was formerly executive director of the Forest Stewardship Council, where he was responsible for leading its restructuring and subsequent expansion into one of the world's leading standards and certification systems. Prior to this he was chairman of the European Forest Team of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

Mr. Liedeker has a M.Sc. in forest ecology from the University of Vermont, USA and a diploma in forestry from Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, Germany.

The EFI FLEGT and REDD Unit houses the EU FLEGT Facility and the EU REDD Facility, which support the European Commission, EU Delegations, EU Member States and partner countries in the implementation of the EU FLEGT Action Plan and REDD+ activities.

The EU FLEGT Facility supports efforts to combat illegal logging and promote trade in legal timber, working with timber producing and exporting countries to develop appropriate systems to ensure the legal trade and export of timber products. The EU REDD Facility provides support to the development of REDD+ policies and actions, assisting both the EU and developing countries.
