Australian Illegal Logging Prohibition Bill introduced in Parliament

The Australian Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, introduced legislation in Parliament on behalf of the Australian Government on 23 November restricting the importation and sale of illegally logged timber in Australia. 

If all goes well, the new law should be in place next year (2012), with associated regulations coming into effect by 2014.

"Illegal logging is a major problem for many developing nations, causing forest degradation, loss of habitat and biodiversity, threatening sustainable livelihoods and contributing to global carbon emissions," said Senator Joe Ludwig, Australia's Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry in a press interview.
