Workshop builds understanding of VPAs in Myanmar
The EU and Myanmar's Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry held a workshop on the EU FLEGT Action Plan in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, from 16 to 18 July. The workshop, ‘EU FLEGT Action Plan: Challenges and Opportunities for the Forest Sector' was attended by representatives from government, civil society and industry.
The aims of the workshop were to inform stakeholders in Myanmar's forest sector about the Action Plan and changes in the international timber market, explain the process of negotiating and finalising a VPA, discuss the government's interest in engaging in FLEGT and identify possible follow-up actions for a FLEGT dialogue.
Participants discussed the forest sector in Myanmar, the EU FLEGT Action Plan, illegal logging and its related trade, timber traceability, VPAs, stakeholder participation and the timber trade. Two participants from Indonesia, one from government and one from a civil society group, shared their perspectives and experiences with the VPA.
