Workshop explores synergies between FLEGT VPAs and forest certification schemes
Representatives of the private sector, civil society, government and certification schemes endorsed by PEFC (Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) discussed VPAs and certification at a side event held on 15 November during PEFC Forest Certification week in Kuala Lumpur. The two-hour side event was organised by the EU FLEGT Facility and had more than 50 participants.
In a presentation, Alexander Hinrichs of the European Forest Institute explained how timber legality assurance systems work under a VPA. Hinrichs pointed out the connections between legality and third-party verification schemes such as PEFC and FSC, showing how legality regimes and voluntary schemes can reinforce each other.
Following the presentation was a discussion, during which audience members asked about the VPA process and FLEGT licensing, especially in Indonesia and Malaysia. Some participants noted that legality and certification schemes can work together in the areas of standards and audit and verification procedures.
