India’s timber industry calls for government support on EU Timber Regulation compliance

The timber industry in India has called for the Indian government to help businesses to comply with the requirements laid out in the EU Timber Regulation.

The call follows a series of six workshops and roundtables on the regulation held during the first half of the year, organised by the EU FLEGT Facility in collaboration with trade timber associations across the country. The workshops, held in New Delhi, Jaipur, Kozhikode, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad, were well attended and received wide coverage by India's trade media.

In particular, the industry has asked the government to provide guidance on how to comply with the EU Timber Regulation and to set up a single window through which timber exporters to the EU can source Indian timber that complies with the EU's new regulation. Workshop participants had also called for training courses and suggested that the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts develop a certification scheme.
