China to actively take part in international cooperation on forestry

The Chinese government has indicated that it will maintain its active participation in international forestry cooperation. "China will continue to support forestry related activities of other APEC economies access to the Asia Pacific Networking on Forest Rehabilitation and Sustainable Forest Management" said China's President, Mr.Hu Jintao during the opening of the First APEC Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Forestry.

In addition, China's Vice Premier Hui Liangyu, who spoke at the closing ceremony of the same event, said that China is prepared to play an active role in advancing sustainable development of forests in the Asia-Pacific region and to share China's experiences and information with APEC members. Hui also said that China will increase its support to the Asia-Pacific Network for Sustainable Forest Management and Rehabilitation (APFNET).

The meeting, which was held in Beijing on the 6th and 7th of September, passed the Beijing Forestry Declaration. The declaration urges APEC economies to strengthen coordination and cooperation on forest policies and will be submitted to APEC leaders at the next summit in November.

These latest statements support China's earlier efforts to further cooperation on forestry. In 2010, The European Union and China started a policy dialogue on forest governance and related developments and launched a coordination mechanism. Under this mechanism joint EU – China activities will take place and include those relating to capacity building, awareness-raising and timber tracking and tracing in China.
