Guyana and the EU start negotiations on a Voluntary Partnership Agreement
The VPA will help ensure that only timber verified to be legal under Guyana law can be exported to the EU.
European Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs has responded positively to the March request from the Government of Guyana in which the country formally expressed its intention to join the FLEGT initiative. Guyana and the European Commission will soon start formal discussions and agree on next steps.
Guyana is the second country in the Americas to begin negotiations. Honduras and the EU agreed to negotiate in April 2012.
