President of Indonesia asks countries to refuse Indonesia's illegal timber

In a speech, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia called on foreign countries to stop receiving illegal timber to help the country safeguard its huge rainforest.

Yudhoyono said Indonesia should protect the forest and environment by imposing a reward and punishment system.

With more than 120 million hectares, Indonesia has the world's third largest rainforest. To respond to the problem of illegal logging and related international trade, the Government of Indonesia and the European Union recently signed an agreement that will end exports of illegal timber to the EU market.
